Aerobic Hydrogen Accumulation by a Nitrogen-Fixing Cyanobacterium, Anabaena sp.
Hydrogen evolution by a nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium, Anabaena sp. strain N-7363, was tested in order to develop a water biophotolysis system under aerobic conditions. A culture of the strain supplemented with carbon dioxide under an air atmosphere evolved hydrogen and oxygen gas, which reached final concentrations of 9.7 and 69.8%, respectively, after 12 days of incubation. Hydrogen uptake a...
متن کاملComplete genomic sequence of the filamentous nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120.
The nucleotide sequence of the entire genome of a filamentous cyanobacterium, Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120, was determined. The genome of Anabaena consisted of a single chromosome (6,413,771 bp) and six plasmids, designated pCC7120alpha (408,101 bp), pCC7120beta (186,614 bp), pCC7120gamma (101,965 bp), pCC7120delta (55,414 bp), pCC7120epsilon (40,340 bp), and pCC7120zeta (5,584 bp). The chromos...
متن کاملDifferential expression of the two kdp operons in the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain L-31.
In several types of bacteria, the Kdp ATPase (comprising of the KdpABC complex) is an inducible, high-affinity potassium transporter that scavenges K+ from the environment. The cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain L-31 showed the presence of not one but two distinct kdp operons in its genome. The kdp1 consisted of kdpA1B1G1C1D genes, whereas the kdp2 contained the kdpA2B2G2C2 genes. Among the reg...
متن کاملRequirement of Fra proteins for communication channels between cells in the filamentous nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120.
The filamentous nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 differentiates specialized cells, heterocysts, that fix atmospheric nitrogen and transfer the fixed nitrogen to adjacent vegetative cells. Reciprocally, vegetative cells transfer fixed carbon to heterocysts. Several routes have been described for metabolite exchange within the filament, one of which involves communicating chan...
متن کاملRegulation of potassium-dependent Kdp-ATPase expression in the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena torulosa.
The KdpB polypeptides in the cyanobacterium Anabaena torulosa were shown to be two membrane-bound proteins of about 78 kDa, expressed strictly under K(+) deficiency and repressed or degraded upon readdition of K(+). In both Anabaena and Escherichia coli strain MC4100, osmotic and ionic stresses caused no significant induction of steady-state KdpB levels during extreme potassium starvation.
